"So does rolling off the highs with a digital equalizer.(I can hear the boos, but try it.)"

Very interesting. What Frequency? Slope? Filter Q?

We *all* have a filter in the D/A conversion stage anyways! Filters for DA circuits have always been a source of much argument; which sound better, which are theoretically better, which fall down in practice...

Let's say if someone was listening to a vocalist, or choir or spoken word and preferred a filter at 18K on the material. Would he/she be crazy THEN?

Is *all* of the 'sizzle and sparkle' on percussion and chimes the same sizzle and sparkle that puts edge on vocals, the flute and certain string instruments?

Since we're using a filter anyways, I think your idea is not so crazy. In fact, with some REALLY top notch high end high buck DACs, the user can *select* from different filter topologies! Now why would they do THAT? Also, some argue that upsampling has a single good reason for being done in that it jacks up the nyquist frequency and thus the frequency of the anti-aliasing filter that can be used. Some strongly believe that moving this filter further away from the audible bandwidth is a desireable effect.

Good post. Made me think a little bit...

CHeers,
Presto
