I have computer audio and vinyl sharing brotherly (sisterly?) the same shelf on my main audio system... so I feel I can comment, please check my system for details on the setup. Both have their own merits.
The best computer audio I have are the Linn master class hi-rez recordings, e.g. the Messiah from Handel is really beautiful. That is 24/96. The music is alive, fully sounding, and tonality is rich. When I went to a live concert two weeks ago, where other Handel music was performed, with choir and ancient orchestra (Colloquiem Vocale Gent, Berlin Chamber Orchestra) Comparing afterwards it was really a close call, speaking out of acoustic memory.
CD is clearly a step lower, sound more mechanical, but still good. I use Apple Lossless, OSX core at 176/24 talking through Firewire to the DAC... No EQ, effects or whatsoever, everything is switched off.
The vinyl is a class apart.... I played back this weekend a few classical recordings, and although occasionally there are a few pops, it sounds sooo much more liquid and fluid and real, that when afterwards back on digital it sounds boxed. One of the things I keep noticing is the different way of mastering, there is no maximum output level on vinyl, some sound engineers go over the 0dB points in the peaks, and the analog chain can handle this. Another parameter I guess is the simplicity of the production chain, and maybe the musicians playing together instead of the standard takes on contemporay digital productions. A lot of CD's are heavily compressed to make them louder, there are a few exceptions on this rule though.
I don't think there is a good way of reproducing vinyl sound through extra DSP, better consider the real thing.
