I agree. In fact a friend of mine in the business just did some single-blind tests with friends and family using different cables and comparing that to different equalization using iTunes EQ.

There is no way that an analog cable can do much in the way of changing frequency response (the R, L and C are really small) in a typical system, however compression at the high-frequencies is quite common due to dielectric absorption, capacitance, skin-effect and even transmission-line effects on the cable affecting the driver linearity.

Frequency response and compression are totally different phenomenon. Turns out in the tests that the listeners thought that the EQ was essentially the same as what the cable was doing. This has profound implications. It means that the human ear recognizes compression exactly the same as some types of frequency roll-off.
