I have been waiting a year to build my music server and finally used the excuse of 10 days 'flu over the holidays to do nothing else!
My interests are 90% Classical with some Jazz plus Timeless: Sinatra, Beatles, Ella etc.
I have only about 200 CDs to rip plus 250 LPs (eventually) and 50 or so BBC Opera/Prom recordings (Digital Video) which are superb.
I am storing the files on my main server "buried" in the garage, with Gb Ethernet to 3 other PCs around the house plus a feed to my main listening system.
Obviously .flac is the way to go, but now the questions start!
I trial-ripped a dozen or so CDs and did a lot of experimenting with MC12 with the intention of evolving the best setup, deleting the trial and re-ripping from scratch with a consistent set of settings.
There are too many options and setups! I have ended up with a database in a confused state with different views and fields and I keep losing track of what is where and have files stored all over the place.
I am only interested in Standard View, and want a hierarchy like
Composer / Work(Syphony #n, Concerto for Orchestra etc) / Soloist / Conductor / Orchestra / Movements
I realise there lots of exceptions to this schema, but many of you must have done this before! It also can get very verbose, running out of room for path names.
So,
1) Can anyone suggest a preferred hierarchy?
2) What are the merits of storing this as tags in the file (if that is always possible) rather than in the database, and how does one do this consistently?
3) I have discovered how to set the player to fade out/in tracks from a playlist, which is cute for Pop etc, but not at all right for symphonic movements! Is this what Cue lists are for? how does one use them only for classical?
4) Do file locations and folder names really matter if everything is in Tags in the file?
Any other broad suggestions? My aged brain is not so sprightly at remembering details, particularly in such a complex product.
Sorry this is so long!
