stand-alone hard drive jukebox?

I am somewhat new to the PC audio world and am doing research into what is available. I have read up on the SqueezeBox and basic PC audio but have not found what I am looking for. Does anyone make a standalone unit that is basically a replacement for a CD player. What I have in mind is a control unit that is a simple operator interface (like a CD player) that accesses tracks from a HD. It may or may not have the DAC built-in. The HD would be a stand alone unit that connects to the rear of the control unit with a USB. Therefore, you could load the hard drive or update it simply by taking it the PC and downloading the files. I realize this is somewhat like a SB but would fit into a system just like a CDP and be "easy" to operate. (for the technophobics in the family)
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave
