I just got one a few days ago. I agree with the others, the sound out of the box is quite good. Not as good as my home made DAC, but still very good. Quite a bit better than anything else I've heard in the price range.

As to using it as a preamp, well yes you can get sound fron analog in to analog out, but as far as I can tell the chain is analog preamp, volume control, ADC, digital volume control, DAC, analog volume control, buffer. I have no idea what sampling frequency and bit depth its using in that chain.
