The EMU404 USB sounds very good. I was particularly impressed with the soundstage, and EMU's ability to pass on a lot of detail while not sounding too analytic.

I did not try the SPDIF passthrough, but it is a nice feature and the PC does not have to be on.

The only downside was CPU usage. While most sound cards I have tried on an A64/3500 use 2-6% (without upsampling), the 404 USB used about 30-60% CPU. Upsampling was not possible using Foobar/Secret rabbit since the usage quickly went to 60-90% with some hiccups in the sound. However, I am told this may be due the USB drivers for my PC, and with other USB 2.0 drivers this may not be an issue.
