I believe sunseeker was referring to the PCi 0404 which I also have and like.
They do sound very good but from what I read the usb version is quite a different animal and a lot of functionality has been changed. 0404USB has been out for only 5-6 months

I am not sure if you can use it as a preamp, especially without a computer turned on, perhaps 0404usb owners could help here.
