Computer Audio Asylum

I am looking for an external sound card to use either for headphone listening or connect to an amplifier (preferable monoblocks) and speakers. The EMU 0404 USB seems ideal since it has volume controls for both line out as well as headphone out. Is it's sound quality good? It uses AKM AK4396 DAC which is supposed to be good. Can I connect the SPDIF out of a CD player to this device and get analog out (using the direct monitor)? I can then use this as a pre-amp for my CD player also if I don't want to turn on my computer! I may do some recording in future so it's recording facility will be a bonus.

Are there any alternative to consider? Creative's Audigy 2 NX is another option, having remote control for volume and being DVD-Audio compatible.
