Bob,

The toslink out is controled by a usb audio chip inside the mini. You would be getting 10x the jitter out of the toslink.

BTW in most cases if done correctly jitter would be way less in USB than toslink in the first place. Toslink is not considered to be a very high end interface even in SPDIF land.
