Oh Yea, I think lossless = regretless. And your point is well taken, in my case I could always whip out a WAV version for this machine if I want one, but what's gone is harder to recover.

I couldn't help but thinking in your analogy above that mastering and recording differences can easily be more of a factor than the maximum resolution of the media. CD's can sound very good, sadly many of mine don't because they are older.

As far as ripping I wanted to use existing hardware so I tweaked around with MP-3 encoders, decoders, players and settings and came up with a scheme that meets my size goals and sounds good to me. I didn't care for the smugly recommended LAME settings. Hoping to avoid what you are experiencing, I only recorded the music that I listen to a lot and do the rest on the fly. And I'm keeping all the originals. I suppose one of these days I'll follow in your footsteps...
