Formats be Damned

Before I waste gobs of time copying gobs of CD's to my hard drives and doing it over and over because I chose the wrong format, what is the best format. Forget about file size. Hard drive real estate is cheap. Are .WAV better than .AIFF? I've read alot about lossless compression as good as uncompressed. I don't buy that. Finally, when I right click a song in iTunes under the Get Info tab, why do my .WAV files not have an Artworks Tab? I can't copy my album cover unless there is an Artworks tab. iTunes can't supply artwork on less popular material. Thanks.
