Control of Mac Mini Server Without Monitor or Keyboard

Help please!

I’m new to this game, but I want to build a high quality server to replace a Mark Levinson CD player, hopefully with no loss in musical fidelity.

I’m thinking of basing it on a Mac Mini with LaCie or similar Firewire hard drive. The signal to feed a USB DAC, and then on to my analogue (valve) amplifier and speakers. I’d also use a basic hard drive for occasional backup of the LaCie drive.

Is this a good way of doing things? Which DAC would anyone suggest – not barmy price and preferably with a standard digital input as well as the USB one, so I can feed it my DAB tuner’s signal.

Next and most crucially – how should I control the system? I don’t want a monitor or keyboard and I don’t have a TV in my listening room. Ideally I’d like something like a Nokia N800 Tablet or some other wireless device that can control the Mac and allow me to see what’s in my database of music. The only tasks required of the system are: copy from CD to HD (straight uncompressed WAV files), play from CD or HD, interrogate web to add new CDs’ box cover info to My Music database (iTunes ?), create play lists, burn CD-Rs from HD. I can’t think of anything more.

Would the N800 do the job, or what else would? Would I need any other software or hardware?

Any suggestions or comments from inmates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Peter
