"I have been trying to listen to internet audio (some distant FM stations that cannot be received over the air) and have been rather disappointed with audio quality. The content of the internet broadcasts has been quite encouraging though."

If you consider that CD is about 1440kbps, and the streams from internet radio rarely exceed 64kbps -- compressing the audio to half of the information contained in most mp3's -- I think it is far too much to expect high audio quality from these internet streaming stations. [funnily enough, both XM and Sirius Radio are both compressing to about 64kbps, too]

The reason one should listen to it is the content mostly, but a well recorded CD [heck even a poorly recorded one] will blow the pants off of these compressed audiostreams.

A lot of people put a lot of time into doing this - and get mixed results - but it does not sound as good as CD and you will only be disappointed if that is where you expectations are set.

They all say "CD quality" - and it is true in the sense that there is little white noise, no fade outs, but the basic audio quality is nowhere near CD really.
