Poor Internet Audio Quality?

I have been trying to listen to internet audio (some distant FM stations that cannot be received over the air) and have been rather disappointed with audio quality. The content of the internet broadcasts has been quite encouraging though.

I am currently using an HP notebook with a 30 foot analog cable from the notebook's headphone output, to a line level input on my hi-fi system's preamp. The audio generally sounds frequency constricted and like it's under water.

I am considering using an external sound card like the Sound Blaster Extigy to connect to the notebook via USB, and then connect the external sound card via a thirty foot optical Toslink cable to an audiophile quality DAC, and then on to my hi-fi system as outlined above. Has anyone done this, or come up with a solution to this sort of challenge? Is this all a waste of time and money?

Thanks, and Kind Regards.
