I'm running a NUC with Ubuntu 16.10 - LMS 7.9 nightly builds and squeezelite.

My main audio system though is based on a PI2 and ARCHLINUX. That's giving me better results than my AllInOneServer.

You should have a closer look at system tuning options. There's some potential out there.
