I use SOX with MPD for oversampling in realtime using a HP Chromebox (Intel Celeron 2955U processor) running Debian headless. At 4X oversampling the processor load is about 11% and at 8X oversampling the processor load is about double.
The nice thing about SOX is that the oversampling filter parameters can be adjusted to your liking. It takes a bit of figuring out the command line though.
The Chromebox is a great computer for playing music. It is low priced, very quiet even though it has a fan, and also consumes not much power. It needs to be hacked to run Debian but there is information on how to do that online.
