imhe even a cheap 2nd hand office Dell laptop (150USD) with a decent usb to spdif converter (that you can always keep for the future if you like it) can provide a "nice sounding" digital source.
For instance I bought the one in the link and I am liking its sound.
But the choice is really huge, because the concept is very popular.
Good luck !P.S. I have found that keeping the usb cable short and using a longer spdif coaxial is a good thing. I am using a 2 meter Wireworld that I also like a lot. Everything sounds quite relaxed but detailed.
Quite musical to me.
