Clearly, it was a driver issue

especially since my Dell box is now six years old. What ticks me off is the utter inadequacy of Microsoft's compatibility tests. I wasted countless hours farting around trying to get it to work.

The top performing new version of my desktop offers twice the CPU horsepower, but honestly having the computational power of a Cray 2 is sufficient for me. The only task that absolutely slams the eight processors at 100% is Handbrake - converting video content to an MP4 container for use pads and for streaming via Roku.

I recently realized a huge performance gain, however, by moving the OS to an SSD drive.
