I used airport express(several) for many many years and experienced this with some dacs. I remedied with monarchy dip i had. I'm not technical on this, it just seems that some dacs have compatibility issues.

i've now ditched APX due to reliability and sound quality issues. I loved airplay though so i've started using raspberry pi with volumio OS. it has built in airplay and you can use any usb-spdif converter. sound quality is great and it's cheap and easy to put together the raspberry pi.
