I agree that part of the reason for slow sales is that they aren't competitive. But the other reason is that processing and storage requirements for typical everyday computing tasks aren't growing as fast as they used to.
I have a late 2010 MacBook Air, my wife has a 2010 Sony VAIO F, and my father has a 2010 Sony VAIO Y. The MBA and VAIO Y have Core 2 Duo ULVs with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD. They are all still perfectly suitable for everyday computing in 2016.
