The JRiver fee is not an annual subscription. It is a one off charge and that is all there is to pay for the version downloaded, period.
They do offer new versions annually but whether you want or need to buy them is up to you. Much of the updating is often concerned with the video handling capabilities of the player if this interests you. During the time that the version that you have is supported you will be able to get new builds (updates) free.
You can control JRiver via your phone or tablet by downloading their Gizmo app (free).
