I see no way that HAS to be the case....

Regards TIDAL, all of that COULD be done in software in the 'Player'.

Look at HQPlayer. THAT'S a lot of processing before the DAC!

If all they are doing is sending a 24/44.1 stream to your computer/TIDAL player, and decoding SOME of the 'unnecessary' top bits to produce a higher resolution stream for your DAC, I see no reason this could not be accomplished in software rather than hardware.
