The headphone jacks used by many computer manufacturers are of low quality. My guess is that the extension cable is adding enough extra weight to slightly skew the angle of headphone plug after it is inserted into the headphone jack. Poor electrical contact is the result.
Try wiggling the headphone plug a bit when the cable extension is connected, you might be surprised.
