Are you certain that your laptops are connecting at 802.11n over 5GHz? Is it possible that you have other devices on the network at 802.11g speeds that might be slowing everything down?
I'm getting about 175Mbs over Ethernet and pretty much the same over my 802.11n at 5GHz wifi, as reported by speedtest.net. My wifi router is in the basement but elevated toward the floor joists. My laptop in the office is about 22' away from the router with obstructions being mostly the wooden floors and some drywall.
http://speedtest.net is popular
Here, I'm seeing about 175Mbs on downloads over my Wifi
http://speedof.me is probably more realistic
Here, I'm showing just over 100Mbs on downloads over my Wifi.
