It seems to me that the computer will remain a critical tool in developing audio tech, so I don't see why playback options would narrow on the computer platform, at any rate.But the audio field HAS already narrowed in the realm of mass-distributed, hard media. CD's are no longer a thing, it seems, except to hardcore holdouts like myself.
I used to put remastered files on CD for clients. I don't even bother now. All the stuff is processed to compressed format for iPod playback. But I do the processing ON COMPUTER! It just gets more and more useful as an audio processing tool as the years go by.
