What makes you believe the field is still in its infancy? Computer audio has been around for as long as there have been sound cards in computers. No, the field will not narrow. It will continue to expand. To more hardware products, more software solutions, more diverse approaches to playing digital audio files.
Don't expect a shakeout, as you'd see in other industries. There just isn't enough mass in the audiophile world to do that.
