I never really ran iTunes, but my kid has fought it for years. If you change the format from wav to mp3 to put on his iPod, then you duplicate everything. It's great if you rip with it and buy songs and don't want to have a clue.
The problem is that all these folks want to to things for you and screw up because no one tests stuff, that's what users are for. The last Mac Mini Mavericks update that I did reset my ssh port to the default and I couldn't login remotely until I figured that out. Why did they screw with that config file? It had nothing to do with the update for Safari.
I don't envy them though. Updating software always breaks something somewhere, but adding DRM to your CD rips is an unwanted new feature that had to be done on purpose.
