Just my perspective....
I consider digital audio to be a far more mature technology (despite deficits of particular formats).
Digital photography needed semiconductor densities to reach an enabling level where the resolution of the sensors could meet (and exceed) that of film and the computational power needed to process those images (at a consumer friendly price) could be met.
But, I think the real reason that you see so much advancement in digital imaging vs audio is easier to explain by asking where the research dollars come from and where they go to. For better or worse, the evolving "surveillance state" and the needs of the military is where our tax dollars go, not to improved musical audio reproduction.
Like Tang, Teflon, Velcro, and the Internet, consumers reap of the side benefits of our defense research dollars.
Cerebrate!
