USB not good with USB dacs

If your dac is USB and your storage is USB then the low level drivers are going to be fighting a bunch. Really the only way to get around that is using software that loads everything into memory. Think about it this way if you don't use memory buffering for the whole song then the application will be reading from the USB disk and writing to the USB dac in a synchronous manner. That ends up causing audible problems, especially on cheap streamers and servers.

Putting the storage on your root drive means the OS is will trashing around against the playback application and guess who's going to win that war?

Really the best bet is to use storage on a medium that is not used by other devices. Like Firewire or Thunderbolt.
