What use do most people have for an optical drive these days? If I use one twice a year that's a lot, and it's because I bought a software package on a special deal, otherwise I would have gotten the downloadable version.
Of course there are some people who still have a reason to need an optical drive, such as ripping CD's, but it doesn't make sense to add weight and expense to a general purpose laptop for something that only a few customers need. There are other machines or external drives that will do the trick.
