I bought the LG GE24NU40 a few months ago. (OWC's external optical drive also uses an LG mechanism.)
Ripping CDs using XLD for Mac, I find the LG GE24NU40 reads the first 1 or 2 tracks of a CD extremely slowly, then speeds up dramatically. The internal Hitachi optical drive in my previous Mac did not suffer this initial slowness with XLD.
