The DSD conversion in the DirectStream isn't defeatable. The whole point of the DirectStream is that a single bit DAC has many benefits over other DACs and it enables a simple and great sounding DAC implementation.

How is converting PCM to upsampled multibit signma delta like most DAC chips do closer to "PCM's intent?

I'd argue that using better upsampling algorithms with more accurate math preserves more of the original PCM.
