I could stream MKV from a USB disk attached to my upstairs PC on a 100mbit network. I shared this disk through a simple windows share.
Therefore from my personal experience... you don't need much at all.
But since we have an electricity bill twice as high as the average dutch household. I added a 2nd hand...low end NAS. Cost me 40 euros. Conceptronic CHM3NAS it does the same thing my PC does but uses WAY less electricity than a PC.
To summarize. I suggest you get a NAS that can hold around 6TB and that's it.
