Connecting macbook to dac

I have spent the last hour or so trying to connect my old Macbook to a little doc dacII, with no joy at all. I am wondering if anyone can help.

The dac won't recognise the rca input, but will recognise the USB input (in fact I hear a click through my stereo when it goes onto that. Unfortunately it won't produce any sound. It seems like the macbook doesn't see the dac, as it keeps making sound itself, unless I connect the headphones.
I saw something online that you can output from the headphone jack to toslink, but I don't have one of those cables (and it might mean more good money after bad)
