Allows for loudness. The loudness wars were attempts to make compression sound better & compensate for it.
I think that Apple told the labels that they could help them go out of business slower by lowering the music quality, and selling 1 or 2 songs instead of 15. Something is better than nothing. Apple's delivery mechanism, content, & playback software, especially it's shite DB: is designed to make crap king.
Just a few songs, of crap quality: rejecting previous concepts of AOR & collecting complete works of art. Apple & it's recording industry, is destroying art & music as we knew it.
