I had several other paths to follow but I went with the Apple proprietary path because I thought it would be the most stable.
The Squeezebox, and maybe your PC as well, are quite different in that your systems continue to work without them (ie. replacements can be found).
With the iPod Classic being discontinued it's the end of the road. When my iPod hangs it up my systems are dead - it's not like any other device can fill the void.
