RE: is hooking up a laptop to my system even worth it?

"It really is great."

Hey, if it's great then enjoy it!

Maybe you could use your laptop as a source for a second system in your den? Get some modest, powered pro speakers and enjoy tunes while you work! I highly recommend the JBL LSR305s, but I would wait a bit before buying. They seem to go on sale every few months (the last sale finished at the end of August) and you can pick them up for about US$225 to US$250 a pair. Get some stands to lift the tweeters to ear height and even plugged directly into your laptop you'll be amazed at how much music and fun there is in those little boxes.

If you have a Guitar Center in your neighborhood check out what they have on offer. Guitar Center has a nifty 30 day MBG that can take a lot of the stress out of buying new gear.
