If you are curious about upsampling to DSD or DSD128 you might try HQPlayer. It will do both and comes with a bunch of different filtering and modulator options to play around with. The software is not free, but there is a free trial period which will allow free experimentation.
With my Mytek DAC, I found that converting the usual PCM formats to DSD64 slightly softened the presentation and wasn't quite what I wanted to hear, compared to upsampling in the computer (44/16 to 176/24) or playing hi-res PCM directly. However, I found all PCM formats sounded better when using HQPlayer to convert to DSD128. This also enables me to listen to DXD files without downsampling.
