I use an external USB powered drive and a USB 2.0 connection to my DAC.Yes, I know, conventional wisdom has it that the output and input shouldn't both be USB or something bad will happen, something about USB processor load and not being able to handle it all. That might be true in theory, but who cares.
Try it, it will save you money and get you on your way. And then you might find it works great and you don't need to change anything.
Seriously, I'm not saying that it might not have been true at some point, but the USB/USB is a bad thing is approaching urban myth status. The multiple core processors in just about any laptop can easily handle the minimal load that sound playback presents.
