Reading the posts below, I give up and intend to have some peace of mind.
I still haven't used the second GA G31 board you got for me. I intend to dig it up and install one of these nofan heat sinks in a very nice Xigmatek case, reduced by 2/3! Thanks again.
The sexy but unscreened 15 cm sata cable I used really killed the sound and I never expected that it would be so much. I guess that it was partly to do with proximity to the pico supply and one of the MB Bridges.
