Music storage and sound quality: local HD (SSD) vs. network.

Had finally a chance to compare this weekend. Not a huge surprise probably, but music from local storage sounds better. Music from the network storage loses HF details to some extent, and soundstage becomes flatter.

Added benefit of keeping files locally is the ability to get rid of 3 network-related services, and disable "Client for Microsoft Networks" protocol. For the purposes of this experiment though, network adapter and all network-related services were kept enabled in both cases.

Local storage was represented by:

- old 40Gb IDE HD with IDE-to-SATA adapter, transfer speed up to 1.5 Gb/s
- 64Gb Sandisk SSD, transfer speed up to 6 Gb/s

Both were fed from the same external dual-output PS, producing 12V at 2A and 5V at 2A. Both were connected to SATA III ports on the MB. Both "sounded" better than network-stored files, with me being unable immediately - and not caring to try further - hear any difference between HD- and SSD-stored files.

Network storage is a share on a laptop, both Audio PC and laptop are connected by wired Ethernet to a router. Also, configuration without router was tried, with 2 PCs connected with a cable, to no appreciable difference in sound. Other details of the system can be found in couple of threads down this page.

Curiously, the one thing recommended by JPlay developer (JPlay was not used in this experiment) to improve sound quality when pulling files over the network in his Streamer mode was to connect 2 computers directly with an audio-grade network cable. Yes, there IS such thing - one of the examples would be Acoustic Revive. I'm not particularly interested at the moment.
