"...ripping to HD still requires reading from a cheap transport."This statement makes it clear that you do not understand the basics of losslessly extracting the data from a CD. Your assumption that somehow a more expensive transport can read this data better is fundamentally flawed.
Before you continue on the computer audio path I suggest you come to grips with this basic statement:
A $10 CD-ROM drive can read the data from one of your music CDs as well as a $50,000 CD-ROM drive.
