Thanks, Ralph. That was it; when I switched to the turntable which runs balanced, both tape outs were functional. Odd that I had never noticed this before, as I have had the MP-3 for a number of years, but then, I had almost always used balanced inputs and rarely used the tape loops.
BTW, have been running the main balanced outputs into a top end ADC and the resulting needle drops sound spectacular. Shows off just how great the phono stage and line stage sound. Definitely better than taking the signal out of the tape output and applying gain digitally after recording. Plus the trim pots give fine control over any imbalances in the cartridge. Markedly better than several other stand-alone phono preamps I had tried running through the MP-3.
