The V4 tube in the M-60 is the driver tube that is direct-coupled to the output tubes. On the Mk2.2 chassis, it is the rear right hand tube. V3 is the constant current source, rear left.
V1, V2 and V3 comprise the voltage amplifier stage. V1 and V2 are the most audibly important; V1 (bottom of differential cascode) is front left, V2 (top of differential cascode) is front right.
At least 200uf on the plate of V4 is needed to really get the circuit to perform. In the production amplifiers there is a separate leg in the power supply for the cathode circuit as well- that also has a minimum of 200uf.
Nowadays we run the voltage amplifier off of its own separate leg of the power supply so it can't 'talk' to the power supply of V4. Since the current requirements are not nearly as profound and because it has a very effective CCS, we run 100uf for the plate and 100uf for the cathode circuit (cathode of V3).
The result is that the driver power supply is free of noise with any signal or input level- this is very important for low distortion (in audiophile terms, 'smooth sound with good detail') and authority.
