Both are varients, with slightly different mu, linearity and plate resistance. But they all work. In an OTL for example, you would want to make sure that you use all of one type. There might be other considerations (bias point is an obvious one and the cathode current limiting resistor another) but you could make it happen.

There are other variants but the WE and TungSol seem to me the most notable.
