The 300b OTL that we made sounded a lot like our regular amplifiers- showing that the tube itself was nothing magic in particular. The big difference was that it was not as powerful, as we would have needed a lot of 300bs to do the job that the 6AS7Gs did easily.
We got some coloration that had entirely to do with the output impedance being higher; once we corrected for that by removing 6AS7Gs from our comparison amp the differences vanished.
Now if you built a speaker for an amp like this that was a very high impedance speaker, perhaps a line source built out of four 16 ohm full-range drivers (for a 64 ohm load), you would have no coloration issues and plenty of power. Of course, you could do the same thing with only a pair of 6AS7Gs... any way you look at it the 6AS7G is more practical.
