I've heard that the silver oxidation/sulfide surface corrosion is less detrimental to its sound than copper oxide is to a copper wire's. I would opt for high quality insulation most probably. If you can get solid conductor in foamed polyethylene or foamed teflon (FEP), I think that would be better yet than solid insulation. Best is if it's well bonded to the conductor rather than loosely sleeved (to prevent oxidation). Except where current requirements dictate larger diameters, I would probably use 20 to 26 AWG solid core. I think any sonic advantage of going finer is marginal and would be outweighed by the fragility of the conductor plus the really fine stuff would probably be more susceptible to resonating to air or structural vibrations.
