1.6 & the ficus tweak

62.42.63.4

after carefully reading the thread below on damping dipoles
i decided to give the idea a try, so i took my two 6' ficus
from the corners and placed them as close as i could to the
rear of my 1.6, with the trunk of the plants directly damping
the beam of the rear tweeters, but with no leaf actually
touching the magnets (well, almost..)

then i proceeded with my usual routine of listening: piano,
guitar, violin, cello, organ, chamber, light orquestra, big
orquestra, leader, cantata/oratorio, bir chorus, big opera,
light vocals, acoustic jazz & pop/rock

the results? big improvement in that the music sounded invariably
much more CLEAN, and that i was able to pinpoint more precisely
the particular instruments/voices in the context of the whole
soundstage; the timbres are even more realistic, the transients
crispier, the highs much more palatable even in my worst sounding cds,
the midrange even more magic (thanks Jensen!!) and the
bass clearly tighter; i am unable to see any lost in the
air or the ambience of the music, including reflection and
room/hall reverberation, so i'm inclined to think that there must
be a good amount of sound garbage on the rears of my maggies,
which may possibly be due to the out of phase character of these
sounds; finally, the soundstage is definitely NOT being shrunk

in a sense i'm a little sorry about that, because it shows once
again that with maggies there is no contest between most of my
former electronic tweaks and the correct acoustic tuning; i can
even go as far as to say that the ficus tweak, together with
the tweeters inside tweak have been my most successful experiments
so far; i'm also sorry because i liked to see my two ficus on
the corners and now they can hardly be seen at all, but as the
musical results are my first priority, so they are there to stay
(fortunately, my set-up is WAF free)

i never liked the idea to try eggcrate panels or room lenses
because i think they are too regular (geometrically speaking)
to be really good difussors, that's why i always used tall
plants; but i never, ever figured out that my ficus were
destined to end up almost totally hidden behind my speakers!!

thanks damping dipoles guys!!
(sometimes to learn is a pleasure!)

best, paco
