You might try pinging an asylum member with the handle John EH - I seem to recall he did some amazing restoration of some very rusty looking ST70 iron and iirc, he used Naval Jelly to deal with the rust.

I tried searching the Bottlehead forum and found a lot of links to his 'after' pictures, but couldn't find the ones with the details of how he took care of the iron - but the 'after' pix look as good as new.
